Friends of Exeter Ship Canal

January 01, 2020

In our second year since setting up, we have started a programme of Saturday morning volunteer days. Clearing vegetation from the canal bank – brambles and saplings – was really enjoyable, while more recently we have done restorative work on the bridge at the entrance to the canal basin, giving it a new coat of paint. Wonford Planters

November 17, 2017

Our love of gardening and our community knows no bounds and we’ve made substantial improvements to the uncared for spaces around Wonford. Our current working area includes the brick planters along Burnthouse Lane, the mini roundabout in Laburnum Road and the top corner of Kipling Drive. We’ve also worked with the Wonford Surgery GPs to improve and enhance the surgery gardens. Large wildflower areas are now in place around there too and we have plans for more in 2018.

Funding from city and county ward grants have meant that we’ve been able to procure the services of the Community Payback teams to assist with some of the heavier work and they’ve planted many spring bulbs around the area. We also work in conjunction with Wynstream Primary School who supplied compost and wood chip materials.

Ludwell Life

November 11, 2017

Ludwell Life wanted a bench for people to sit and admire the stream and woodland. The Council supplied the bench and we volunteers installed it, (with help and tools from the Council). We now keep the weeds cut around and are very pleased that it hasn't been vandalised at all.
